Harness engineering for coding agents

A coding agent runs inside a harness: the instructions, commands, permissions and checks around it in your repositories. We engineer that software runtime so the agent works with your build, tests and review process.

What the harness includes

We work in your repositories on the parts that decide what an agent knows and what it may do.

  • Repository instructions written for agents
  • Build and test commands the agent can run
  • Context and tool access, including which files, services and endpoints are in scope
  • Permissions and approval rules for edits, shell commands and network access
  • Hooks, tests, review steps and documentation rules

Versioned configuration

Harness files belong in version control with a named owner and a change process. Without that, repositories drift apart as engineers add their own settings. We help you decide what is shared across repositories, what stays local, and how to check for drift.

Handover

We change one part of the harness at a time and check the effect on representative tasks, using repository evaluations where a comparison is needed. Your engineers get the configuration and runbooks to keep changing it themselves.

Questions

We already have agent instruction files. Where do we start?

With what you have. We check the existing instructions against the commands that actually build and test the repository, remove outdated or conflicting guidance, and put the files under version control with an owner.

Which coding agents does this cover?

The agents your team uses. Most harness concepts apply across tools, though file formats differ.
